The Contender was written in memory of Jack Doyle. In 1933 he drew 90,000 fans to White City to see him box and was making £600 a week on stage as a singer. He was ninteen. The Irish boy whose dream was to fight like Jack Dempsey and sing like Count John McCormack had the whole world at his feet. When he died in London in 1978, he was shoeless and destitute. | ||||
